An expert wordsmith, Monice Mitchell Simms is a WGA award winning screenwriter, author, playwright, poet, filmmaker, podcaster, and EP-Showrunner of diverse projects adapted from literature, stage, social media and biographical IP.
Monice is also the creator, showrunner and host of the storyteller podcuseries, Works~N~Progress. which recently won a 2026 silver Telly Award for Online Series:Arts & Culture and a bronze Telly Award for Series Interview & Talk Show. WNP was also a recipient of the Podcasting, Seriously Award Fund, and won the w3 GOLD award for “Best use of Writing” in podcasting in 2025.
As a journalist, Monice has interviewed some of the world’s greatest storytellers, including Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Hollywood director Gina Prince Bythewood and President Barack Obama.
As a poet and playwright, she penned “Stop the Great War,” which was recognized as a Lorraine’s Hansberry finalist in the American College Theatre Festival and produced as a film for public television.
As a filmmaker, Monice wrote, produced and directed two lauded short films, “Carmin’s Choice” and “Rain” for Showtime.
As an author, she’s been published in multiple genres and has written seven books, including her children’s story, “Nana’s Fridge.” And her historical novel, “Address: House of Corrections,” was a fan favorite scripted podcast.
And as writer-for-hire, Monice continues to employ her super power adapting stories from literature, stage and social media IP to the screen. Some of her recent successes are:
Monice’s 2010 debut novel, “Address: House of Corrections,” will be published by Recorded Books – the number one audiobook publisher in the world – Fall 2027.
Monice is adapting Cathleen Meredith’s fan favorite novel, “Fat Girls Dance” into a movie franchise series.
Monice was a staff writer on the BET+ series, “All the Queen’s Men,” which was adapted from the novel, “Ladies Night.
“Redeemed,” which Monice adapted from the novel, “Serving Justice” is streaming on multiple platforms.
Monice also adapted, co-wrote and produced the independent documentary, “Two Classes of 1968.”
And Monice won a Telly Award as the EP-showrunner-writer of the docuseries, “Discovering West Africa: Ghana, Senegal and Cameroon with World Wide Nate,” now streaming on Wondrium.
Monice holds a BA in journalism and has reported for numerous publications, including the Directors Guild of America Magazine. She also earned a MFA in film, and is a graduate of the Producers Guild of America Diversity Masters Workshop, the Showrunner Mentorship Academy and she’s an alum of the International Rocaberti Writers Retreat Hall of Fame.
